Dr. Wallach is very excited to introduce you to the latest high-tech tool in her optometric armamentarium - the Optos Optomap. This instrument allows for a higher level of eyecare, which all of our patients deserve.
The Optomap is an imaging system, which photographs the retina (the sensory layer lining the inside of the back of the eye). It allows for an ultra wide-field view of the retina, including the peripheral parts, which are most susceptible to retinal holes, tears and detachments. The optic nerve (site of glaucoma) and the macula (site of macular degeneration) are permanently documented. This means any future concerns can be compared back to a baseline photo. The Optomap photo can allow for better follow-up on diabetic and hypertensive patients because the retina is the only place to view internal, tiny blood vessels.
The Optomap offers the convenience of having a comprehensive screening of the retina - usually without dilation! Dr. Wallach will still recommend dilation for many patients, especially to evaluate for cataracts. This is a great undilated option for healthy business people not wanting to have blurry vision for 3 hours.
This test may be covered by medical insurance, and otherwise is a nominal fee of $39.
